Everyone Are Invited to Join as the Fourth Haim Member.

"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

It's clear something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos often depict them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to make music."

Historic Recognition

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound resilience demanded a new sound – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
